Partnership: How to cold call with confidence, and why the pyramids aren’t as tall as you think

Happy Partnership Wednesday! Here are 3 ideas from me and 1 question for you to help solve your hardest problems through partnerships this week.

3 IDEAS FROM ME

I.

There are two types of ‘cold calls’. Ones made by fast-talking salespeople from anonymous phone numbers are annoying and unhelpful. And those which are authentic and unexpectedly helpful. The latter usually involves a well-crafted introduction that is Short, Actionable and Meaningful or SAM (learn more here).

II.

Introductions are critical and an often forgotten part of a cold call. When it comes to professional cold-calling using a platform like LinkedIn, sending a ‘connection request’ without an introduction is a surefire way to be ignored. Here’s how to personalise a LinkedIn invitation.

III.

A well-designed cold call is the first handshake in a relationship. Here is the template I use when cold-calling someone of interest on LinkedIn.

Hi [Name], I’m Phil Hayes-St Clair, CEO at Drop Bio Health, the at-home health technology company headquartered in Sydney, Australia. We are a [insert relationship] and I look forward to connecting here. Regards, Phil

SAM = Short (less than 400 characters), Actionable (asking to connect) and Meaningful (I’m a customer or a partner)

or this…

Hi [Name], I’m Phil Hayes-St Clair, CEO at Drop Bio Health. We are trying to make a supplier decision between your company and [insert competitor name ] and I would appreciate your input. Are you open to a call? Regards, Phil

SAM = Short (less than 400 characters), Actionable (asking FOR HELP) and Meaningful (I’m a FUTURE customer)

While you can create various versions of this introduction, be ready to respond when the handshake is reciprocated.

1 QUESTION FOR YOU

‘The pyramids are not as tall as you think’ means people, in particular future partners, are more accessible than ever before. It is also a message of encouragement. Reach out to potential partners who you think might be out of reach.

Who should you reach out to this week?

The worst they can say is ‘no thanks’… and then you know. Go for it!
