Partnership: On why fortune favours the follow-up, and becoming a remarkable partner
Happy Partnership Wednesday! Here are 3 ideas from me and 1 question for you to help solve your hardest problems through partnerships this week.
3 IDEAS FROM ME
I.
“Fortune favours the follow-up” is a message of encouragement to persist because you could be one follow-up message away from a partnership moving from an outside chance to being the game-changer you hoped it could be.
II.
Reframe follow-up reluctance. Senders of follow-up messages will often make the act of reaching out about them without thinking about the life of the recipient, who will often be busy. A lack of reply isn’t personal. Help your future partner know that you are ready to help them become more successful by taking the next step and following up.
III.
High impact follow-ups have three ingredients. They are Short, Actionable and Meaningful or SAM. Ask yourself one question next time you draft a follow-up: Is this SAM? Short means 300-400 characters (not words!). Actionable means making an ask. Meaningful could mean showing empathy for the recipient's busy schedule or it could mean attaching or linking to a resource or event that demonstrates your interest in them, their business or a problem they are trying to solve.
1 QUESTION FOR YOU
To be remarkable means being worthy of attention. One way to become remarkable in the eyes of a future partner is to regularly check in and ask how you can help (in addition to delivering on the intent of the partnership). Because it is staggering how few people do this, here is my question: What have you done recently to help (or thank) one of your partners?
