On never leaving value on the table, and the impact of unexpected care

Happy Partnership Wednesday!

Next week I’ll be sharing my holiday reading list (which might include the ideal read to gift this Christmas) but without further ado, here are 3 ideas from me and 1 question for you to consider this week to create partnerships you never thought possible.

3 IDEAS FROM ME

I.

Partnership, by definition, is a relationship where the all parties stand to benefit by creating an outcome they could not achieve alone.

II.

The definition and measure of the benefit or upside for one partner will often be very different to another. It’s up to each party to define that measure and explain why it matters to their partner. That context is an essential ingredient in deepening trust, bringing two parties together and discovering opportunities beyond the initial idea.

III.

If one party will ‘lose out’ over the short or long term, there might be a deal to be had but it’s not a partnership. Always favour partnership over a deal, it’s where unexpected growth comes from. And it’s ok to walk away from a deal.

1 QUESTION FOR YOU

The following story is told with permission.

I was recently on a trip where my team and our new partner were meeting to flesh out details of a new partnership. Values and product alignment from day one was on point. Our vision shared.

We knew going into that conversation that a team member on the partner side had a family member who was unwell. Sadly, the family member passed during our session, and understandably, he was in shock.

Moments later, as he was preparing to depart to be with his family, my team each stood and gave him a hug, wished him well and assured him, we had his back.

I had not witnessed something like this before. It was raw, unexpected and human.

I share this with you because this, to me, is the bedrock of a great partnership. It’s the small acts that go well beyond a signed agreement or expectation.

So here is today’s question:

What is a small and unexpected act that you can do for one of your partners today?

Pro-Tip: Unexpected thoughts that surprise and delight are the key.
