On upgrading from 1.0 to 2.0, the power of repetition, and cutting misunderstanding off at the pass
Happy Partnership Wednesday!
Before we dive in, I promised you last week that I would share my nine-book holiday reading list with you. Three of these nine books had a profound impact on how I show up this year and how I’ve shaped 2024 and beyond - Outlive by Peter Attia MD, 4000 Weeks by Oliver Burkeman and The Diary of a CEO by Steven Bartlett. So if you need something just for you, a loved one or a colleague these holidays, take a look here.
Now, without further ado, here are 3 ideas from me and 1 question for you to consider this week to create partnerships you never thought possible.
3 IDEAS FROM ME
I.
What got you here, won’t get you there so when you think about upgrading a partnership (read: in business, your marriage or friendship), three questions require honest answers from the people involved:
What have I loved about the partnership to date?
What events and behaviours (including my own) have frustrated me about our partnership?
When I look back in another [insert the length of the partnership to date], I would like to use this language to explain our partnership: [insert two to three statements]
Now share this with your partner with a view to upgrade to 2.0.
II.
Start every meeting with your partners by stating the core objective of the partnership. It’s a mistake to assume that people remember given the competing priorities in their lives.
III.
Misunderstandings between partners arise from a lack of context. Cut misunderstandings off at the pass by assuming best intentions and connecting with your partner on a voice or video call. And when it comes to text messages and emails, leave them as a last resort, they usually suck more context out of a situation.
1 QUESTION FOR YOU
Misunderstandings between partners cause unnecessary stress. Who do you need to connect with to clear the air and get back on track?
