Reciprocity, the power of well-explained risks and overcoming tense negotiations

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BE IN MOTION

Happy holidays! Welcome to Partnership Wednesday! Here are 3 ideas from me and 1 question for you to consider this week to create partnerships you never thought possible!

3 IDEAS FROM ME

I.

In 2008, SpaceX faced bankruptcy after three failed rocket launches. Enter NASA, who awarded SpaceX a $1.6 billion contract under the Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) program. Skeptics questioned NASA’s faith in an unproven startup, but the partnership thrived. In 2012, SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft became the first commercial vehicle to dock with the International Space Station.

This partnership proved that a well-explained calculated risk and a shared vision can turn uncertainty into historic milestones.

II.

Partnerships thrive on reciprocity, not transactions. This is as true in business as it is in our personal partnerships. Looking for ways to make partners feel regularly seen and understood delivers value far higher that one off gifts.

III.

You're facing tense negotiations with key stakeholders. How do you resolve conflicts effectively? I was asked this question from the crowd this week. Here’s my answer:

Tense negotiations with stakeholders aren’t the problem, mishandling them is. Conflict isn’t something to avoid; it’s something to navigate. In high stakes negotiations, start by understanding the root cause: surface issues, underlying interests, and emotional triggers.

Then build psychological safety by acknowledging perspectives and staying calm. Focus on shared outcomes, not winning. Finally, be transparent about limitations and non-negotiables, and know when to pause or walk away if progress stalls. .

Partnerships thrive on trust, clarity, and mutual respect. The goal isn’t short-term wins—it’s long-term success.

Calm minds create clear solutions. Clear solutions build lasting partnerships.
