A LESSON

When IBM partnered with CERN, it wasn’t just about powering the world’s largest particle accelerator—it was about pushing the limits of computing. The accelerator generates 1 petabyte of data per second, and IBM’s supercomputing, AI, and cloud solutions enabled the 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson. But this partnership also sparked key ethical questions: Should private companies benefit from publicly funded research and could reliance on proprietary technology create long-term dependencies?

The IBM-CERN partnership worked because it walked the line between corporate and public interests, but it also showed that without clear boundaries, the balance can tip in ways that benefit one side more than the other.

Key Lesson: Great partnerships balance mutual gain with ethical clarity. Ensure both sides benefit fairly, data ownership and access is clearly defined and avoid dependence that limits options.

A THOUGHT

Visiting the front lines where a partnership is being delivered is a powerful move. More insight will come from one visit that can ever be written in a report.

Why? Matching their model reduces friction and speeds up decision-making.

Here’s how it helps:
• Familiarity – Partners don’t need to reinvent their approach.
• Less friction – Fewer objections, faster approvals.
• Stronger alignment – Incentives stay clear and mutual.

If their model is revenue sharing, licensing, or subscriptions, and yours is different, find common ground to make the deal work.

Partnerships thrive when both sides win in a way that feels natural.

Align the money, and you’ll align the incentives.
