On sharing setbacks, ingredients of a perfect partnership and how to deliver feedback

In partnership with MWAH. Making Work Absolutely Human.

Welcome to Partnership Wednesday! Here are 3 ideas from me and 1 question for you to consider this week to create partnerships you never thought possible, plus additional insight from the Partnership+ podcast.

3 IDEAS FROM ME

I.

Don't let the partnership setback stories go untold. No matter how painful or disappointing, lessons and opportunities live within each setback. And perhaps this might help, I use a mantra called 'learn the lesson in 30'. It means crystallise the learning within 30 days of a setback happening. On average, 30 days is enough time to speak with others to objectively triangulate and understand why the setback occurred and develop a narrative for what happened and how to avoid it in the future. 30 days is also a good mental model to aim for to resolve the discomfort that comes with the setback so instead of carrying negative feelings forward, there is the opportunity to carry and communicate the lessons learnt.

II.

There is such a thing as a perfect partnership. They are characterised by clear ambition, shared language, values and work ethic, consistent and open communication, and a willingness to engage realistic scenario planning. A perfect partnership doesn’t guarantee success but it stacks the odds in your favour.

III.

When it comes to providing feedback about issues with a partnership I consistently apply two principles:

  1. Praise in public and criticise in private

  2. Follow LeeAnn Renninger’s formula for giving feedback:

    • The micro-yes 👍

    • Get specific 🎯

    • Show impact 🌊

    • Ask a question❓
