On creating a ‘hand-off’ habit, the real value of your value proposition and 3 questions to diagnose and under-performing partnership
In partnership with MWAH. Making Work Absolutely Human.
Welcome to Partnership Wednesday! Here are 3 ideas from me and 1 question for you to consider this week to create partnerships you never thought possible, plus additional insight from the Partnership+ podcast.
3 IDEAS FROM ME
I.
When it comes to partnering internally, consider an International Space Station (ISS) analogy. At different points in the day and night, due to the speed at which the ISS travels through space and the tempo at which astronauts operate, there is a need for the ISS crew to be 'handed off' to ground crews in different countries. Those crews have a predictable method for receiving the ISS, looking after them over a specific timeframe and then handing the ISS off to another ground crew at a specified time. Now turn to your team. While the work may differ between timezones, the predictable nature of the hand off (when the hand-off is to take place, what information will be shared etc) helps teams who are not co-located to stay focused on the mission at hand. Create a hand-off habit.
II.
Resist the urge to believe that your value proposition is deeply compelling. Most people you sell to will have slightly different needs which you won't know until you speak with them. Your value proposition is a hand shake. Open each conversation with your value proposition and then listen to see if what you have will solve their problem.
III.
There are 3 questions to ask each team member when a partnership isn’t performing as expected:
Do they believe in the mission?
Do they understand the goals (people take on and ingest information differently)?
Do they have the right skills to execute the goals?
These rarely-had conversations take time and are completely worthwhile because they held reduce unforced errors and reduce the time to goal achievement.
