Women’s Health

ON THIS PAGE

I have a particular interest in women’s health which starts and ends with this idea: We rely so significantly on women and yet they have been largely left behind when it comes to their health.

While improvements are made each day and women’s voices quite rightly are becoming better heard, I advocate for women’s health to help ensure that the women in my life and your life have every opportunity to reach their full potential, and I urge you to do the same.

Let’s dive in.

What Does Women’s Health Mean?

Women's health refers to the branch of medicine that focuses on the unique health needs and concerns of women. It encompasses a wide range of physical, mental, and social aspects specific to females, including reproductive health, gynaecological issues, hormonal balance, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause and conditions that affect women differently than men.

When you dive a little deeper into women’s health, it’s a complex interplay of biological, social, and environmental factors, and to address these factors we need a holistic, comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach that considers the unique needs and experiences of women throughout their lives.

Key aspects of women's health include:

  1. Reproductive Health: This involves issues related to menstruation, fertility, contraception, and pregnancy, including prenatal care and childbirth, as well as conditions such as menstrual disorders, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and uterine fibroids.

  2. Hormonal Health: Addresses hormonal imbalances such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and menopause-related symptoms.

  3. Preventive Care: Encourages regular health screenings, vaccinations, and lifestyle modifications to prevent diseases such as cervical cancer, breast cancer, osteoporosis, and heart disease.

  4. Mental Health: Considers mental well-being, including conditions like depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and postpartum depression, which may affect women differently than men.

  5. Overall Wellness: Emphasises holistic approaches to health, including nutrition, exercise, stress management, and access to healthcare services.

Why Should You Focus on Women’s Health?

I focus on women’s health as a forty something yearly white guy because our world faces a number of overwhelming challenges and opportunities that we cannot overcome without the thinking, foresight and love that only women can bring. And the inconvenient truth is that we (men) have contributed significantly to the pace at which women’s health (and the supporting science and medicine) has progressed.

Why should YOU focus on women’s health? Because your sister, daughter, mother, wife, partner, friend or colleague will inevitably experience avoidable circumstances that will impact or prevent them from living full lives and reaching their full potential. You can make a huge difference to their life by understanding the women’s health issues they will face at different times of their life.

It’s not about ‘fixing’. It’s about understanding and contributing.
